Here is the tenth of 36 plates constituting the "Centennial Album of Pennsylvania R.R. Photos and Prints." It was published originally in the April 1946 issue of "Railroad" magazine, page 18. Print Caption: "Portage Railroad. In canal-boat days the crest of the Alleghenies, west of Hollidaysburg, was breasted by a double-tracked rail system thirty-six miles long, making use of ten inclined planes. Westbound passengers were eased into the valley of the Conemaugh above Johnstown to continue their packet journey by that river and the Allegheny into Pittsburgh." In this context, a westbound passenger train has arrived at the "Foot-of-Ten" ~ just west of Duncansville ~ whereupon the cars will first be uncoupled from the locomotive and then attached to a cable which will pull the cars up the inclined plane. |
